Stop the Tug of War With Time!
In 2008, my world flipped upside down. My assets fell to half of their value, my husband asked me for a divorce (my kids were only 1 and 3 years old) and I was going to loose my job along with several others due to the division being sold. I felt like someone punched me in the stomach, knocked me down, and then was kicking me. I was worried sick about my kids and what impact this would have on them. How was I going to support them in this transition and what were my next steps?

Sound familiar? I know how you are feeling and am feeling some of those same feelings I felt in 2008. Luckliy, I am healthy and my family is healthy - so lets start there and stay there. The very first thing I learned was that self care was the most important thing to help me cope with this transition and to allow me to be resourceful in pivoting. When emotions are high your intellect is low so taking care of yourself will help to lower the stress. 

I went to bed early, started a daily gratitude journal (that I still write in daily- 15 years later), worked to a schedule and didn't pile too much on. More sleep is essential to help your body and mind process and recover, preserve, and restore valuable energy.

I could not control my circumstances but I could focus on what I could control and infleunce. The same is true for you and I today. I focused on my kids and my team and how I could best support them. This helped me focus on what I could control and made me more resourceful at a time where it mattered most. 

Clarity and focus on my desired outcome, energy, and communication was important to my leadership both at work and at home. Whenever emotions tried to take me off track, I was able to shift my focus back on what was productive, on who I was serving, and why it was important to choose power over panic.

Simplicity and structure are more important now than ever.
These crazy storms in our lives will challenge us to be stronger, it may not happen overnight but it will happen if you accept the situation for what it is, not worse than it is or better than it is and focus on supporting others in areas you can control. You will be an inspiration and a leader for others.

I met a collegue of mine a year later who told me that when he is stressed and trying to figure out his best next step. He asks what would Penny do. Wow-I was blown away at value I added to others at such a difficult time for them and myself. Being a leader is being the example. How you show up makes all the difference.
